Two Research Institutes of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen were Awarded by the Shenzhen Basic Research Institute

       The awarding ceremony of the Shenzhen Basic Research Institute was held on January 6. Wang Weizhong, deputy secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, Chen Rugui, the mayor and deputy secretary of the Municipal Party Committee in Shenzhen, and Gao Zimin, the Standing Committee of the Municipal Committee and Secretary-General in Shenzhen were in charge of the award. Led by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data were awarded by the Shenzhen Basic Research Institute. Prof. Xu Yangsheng, President of CUHKSZ and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Luo Zhiquan, Vice President (Academic) of CUHKSZ and academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada attended the ceremony and accepted the plaque on behalf of the two research institutes, respectively. Prof. Li Xuejin, Associate Vice President and Director of Scientific Research Department also attended the awarding ceremony.

       Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD) aims to establish a world-class “big data processing analysis and research base” with independent intellectual property rights and outstanding core technology advantages. It maximizes the role of the national supercomputing Shenzhen Center in the development of big data industries, and make full use of the scientific research strength of the international research teams of CUHKSZ. SRIBD aims to build a comprehensive and innovative research institute that integrates big data analysis and processing technology innovation research, technical services and communication, core technology research, and talent introduction and training, becoming the world-class big data R&D and public service platform. It aims at contributing to scientific research, industrial development, government decision-making, and public services in China in terms of smart medical, intelligent communications, and smart transportation. Prof. Luo Zhiquan, the first dean of the Shenzhen Institute of Big Data is academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, IEEE Fellow, SIAM Fellow and Vice President (Academic) of the CUHKSZ.

       In the five years since the establishment of CUHKSZ, the discipline construction has been gradually improved. The world-class expert teams in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence, big data and data science, future intelligent network, bioinformatics, new materials and energy science, international finance and logistics, pharmaceuticals, and precision medicine have gradually established. They are building an international technology innovation platform based on the development needs of the strategic emerging industries in China and the Pearl River Delta region.
