Talk title: Evaluating Optimization Software
Talk abstract: Since more than twenty years we have been evaluating a wide range of optimization software. This effort is far from perfect but still influential. It has been instrumental to the growth of companies and has helped spreading the news of non-commercial software as well. We will sketch the development over time and the present state of our benchmarking efforts and thus of the available codes as well. Recent developments point to a gradual shift, for example, regarding the class of problems receiving the most attention, or the geographical origin of the software. In particular, three Chinese software companies are playing an important role and exhibit partly excellent performance. We will try to address open questions and discuss the directions in which this service should develop in the near future.
Bio: Hans D. Mittelmann received his M.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Mainz/Germany in 1971 and his PhD from the Technical University in Darmstadt/Germany in 1973. In 1976 he finished the habilitation for mathematics at this university and in 1977 accepted a position as associate professor with tenure at the University of Dortmund/Germany. At that time his research was in the numerical solution of partial differential equations and the finite element method. Dr. Mittelmann spent a Sabbatical in 1981 at the Computer Science Department of Stanford University and in 1982 accepted a full professorship at Arizona State University. He held visiting positions at several universities in various countries. His research moved to computational optimization and its applications; it has been supported by several funding agencies, currently by the US Department of Energy. His publication list exceeds 160 papers. In addition, Dr. Mittelmann provides a free service to the optimization community by evaluating optimization software and by making a large number of solvers freely available for web-based use.
