Director Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo was Awarded the Inaugural Wang Xuan Prize in Applied Mathematics by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics(CSIAM)
On November 18th, the 20th Annual Meeting of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) was held. The meeting aimed to exchange the latest academic progress in industrial and applied mathematics and its application achievements in the industry and to conduct extensive academic exchanges combined with the key and difficult problems that need to be solved urgently in the industry.
At the Meeting, Academician Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo, the director of Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, was awarded the first Wang Xuan Applied Mathematics Award for his outstanding contributions in large-scale wireless network performance optimization. The Wang Xuan Applied Mathematics Award was established in 2018, and this year is the first award. It mainly rewards outstanding scientists who have applied mathematical research results and produced significant value.

In recent years, under the leadership of Academician Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo, the theory and algorithms of Simulated Reality of Communication Networks (SRCON) have been proposed for the first time to address the critical challenges of ultra-large-scale parameter combinations and highly complex networks in 5G network, realizing a new breakthrough in 5G large-scale network performance optimization.
SRCON consists of three key technologies: localized channel modeling, virtual-real fusion spectrum efficiency statistical modeling, and zeroth-order optimization algorithms.

Currently, the SRCON technology developed by Academician Zhi-Quan (Tom) Luo's team has published more than 10 papers in top international journals and conferences, such as SIAM Journal on Optimization, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and NeurIPS, and applied for 6 domestic and international invention patents. The technology has been widely applied in global 5G networks, including China, South Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany, supporting multiple operators' 5G network performance priorities and helping Huawei achieve significant breakthroughs in 5G network optimization. Taking South Korea's third-largest operator LG U+ as an example, the company applied the SRCON technology proposed by academician Luo and the Huawei team on a large scale. In the latest Korean 5G evaluation report released by the authoritative network evaluation organization Umlaut (formerly P3), the company's network performance achieved a total score of 981, far ahead of the other two Korean operators, even when not having an advantage in spectrum resources. LG U+'s network performance outperformed the other two Korean operators, achieved the highest evaluation score, and won global first place for two consecutive years.

In addition, Professor Xiaoping Wang, Executive Director of Shenzhen International Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SICIAM), was elected as a fellow of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) in 2022. Dr. Dong Wang was selected for the Youth Talent Nurturing Project.
