Dr. Lee Ping: What is Big Data
On June 21st, the first lecture of the public science series on big data, titled "What is Big Data," was held by the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data at the CUHK-Shenzhen Affiliated School. The guest speaker for this session was Dr. Lee Ping, the Executive Director of the institute.
The lecture took place at the CUHK (Shenzhen) Affiliated Lewen School, with students and teachers from the affiliated Daoyuan School and Zhixin School joining online. The event was hosted by Xu Nuo, the Deputy Party Secretary of Lewen School. Education consultants Qian Xiyou and Mao Jianping from the CUHK Shenzhen Basic Education Group, along with Peng Hong, Party Secretary and Principal of Lewen School, attended in person.
Dr. Lee Ping began by introducing the generation and development of data, as well as its storage and processing in computers. He linked data to real-life examples, helping the students form a preliminary understanding of "data" and illustrating its importance, laying a foundation for the explanation of "big data."
In the subsequent discussion, Dr. Lee elaborated on the characteristics and applications of big data, exploring its concept and uses across various fields. Together with the students, he uncovered the beauty of data and delved into the mysteries of big data. The atmosphere at the lecture was lively, with frequent applause. Students shared their insights on big data and posed thought-provoking questions such as "Can big data encompass everything?" and "Can big data predict the future?" Dr. Li answered each question and praised the students' insightful and critical thinking.
